A perfectly layered necklace stack looks effortless — but there is a little method behind it. Master these simple rules and you can layer like a stylist with pieces you already own.
1. Vary your lengths
The golden rule of layering is spacing. Choose necklaces that sit at clearly different lengths — for example a choker, a mid-length chain and a longer pendant — so each one has room to be seen. Around 5cm between each layer is a good starting point.
2. Anchor with one focal piece
Let one necklace be the star — a pendant or charm — and keep the others simple so they frame it rather than compete with it.
3. Mix textures, keep the metal consistent
Mixing chain styles (a fine cable, a bold curb, a twist) adds interest, while keeping everything in the same metal tone keeps the look intentional. All-gold layers are the easiest way to look polished.
4. Odd numbers work best
Two can look accidental. Three necklaces almost always looks more balanced and considered.
5. Choose waterproof pieces so you can layer daily
The joy of layering is leaving it on. Gold-filled necklaces are waterproof and tarnish-resistant, so your stack survives showers, workouts and the beach.
